A HOME FOR THE STORY BEHIND THE STORY

"WHEN YOU TURN IN A STORY, YOU FEEL LIKE YOU'RE ONLY SQUEEZING A THIRD OF THE LEMON."

—Damien Cave, New York Times Editor

We have a hunch: that writers' best stories haven’t been told. That the most compelling personal journeys don't make it into print. That the way a journalist digresses from a plan or pitch is precisely what warrants telling. We’re launching Off Assignment—a home for the tales writers gather en route to official stories—to prove it.

Forged by today’s top journalists, essayists, and travel writers, Off Assignment is a publication dedicated to candid storytelling about moving through space. We're now expanding beyond our grassroots beginnings as a series of literary salons, aiming to bring a new era of travel writing to a global, digital audience.

ON THE PAGE, ON THE STAGE, AND IN YOUR EAR

This spring, we unveiled "Letter to a Stranger": a weekly web series of missives to haunting strangers from writers' past journeys. Read them online or subscribe to our podcast to hear them aloud.

And this summer, we're finishing up our first print volume—soon to be available through Kickstarter. Stay tuned!
